The Meisterschule at HTL Ortwein (Graz) applies a case-based, project-integrated learning model that bridges technical mastery, economic decision-making, and real-world construction practice. Instead of predominantly lecture-based teaching, learning is structured around authentic project cases drawn from current timber construction and building practice. Participants analyse, plan, and solve complex tasks that combine design, structural reasoning, production planning, and site coordination.
A core methodological innovation is the systematic integration of iterative problem-solving cycles: learners develop solutions, receive expert and peer feedback, revise their approach, and justify their decisions. Group work is deliberately composed to mirror professional project teams, fostering collaboration, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills.
The programme links workshop-based experimentation with digital tools (e.g., CAD/CAM, digital planning workflows) and on-site application, ensuring continuous transfer between theory and practice. Performance-based assessment prioritises demonstrable competence in realistic scenarios rather than purely theoretical examinations.
Through close interaction with regional companies, real project constraints, cost considerations, and construction processes are embedded in the learning environment. The Ortwein Meisterschule thus represents a transferable VET model that combines case-based learning, reflective practice, and industry integration to strengthen professional judgement and work readiness in the Habitat sector.
